If you use the internet, chances are you’ve come across an infographic. In the last couple of years, infographics have become immensely popular with the terms “infographic” and “infographics” increasing in search volume by 800% since 2010 (see the Google Trend stats here.

So what exactly IS an infographic?

The word “infographic” is a combination of the words “information” and “graphic”. According to Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infographic), the text definition of an infographic is a “graphic visual representations of information, data or knowledge intended to present information quickly and clearly.” Basically, an infographic is a way to share information using pictures. If you want to communicate complex information about your business or industry to masses of people who will probably struggle to understand, then yes. Aside from making whatever you are trying to communicate easier to digest, infographics also hold people’s attention better than say a lengthy article. Your article might have a ton of great information, but people get bored and distracted easily, and your audience might become frustrated if the topic is a difficult one.

Using an infographic means you can feed the information to your audience in a way that anyone can understand, and it’s far more enjoyable than reading a wall of text. There is also research that shows information shown visually is more easily remembered (W.H. Levie and R. Lentz, “Effects of Text Illustrations: A Review of Research,” Educational Communications and Technology Journal 30 (4) (1982): 195-232).

Aside from how well they work in providing information, here are more reasons why you should use infographics:

  • So easy to share! Think about all the times you’ve shared photos of your kids or pets to social media… it’s just as easy to share an infographic! You can share it as an image, or a link to a page on your site holding the image.
  • More brand awareness. Make sure your logo is in your infographic, and as it’s shared, your brand will travel with it.
  • Great for skimmers. Some people just don’t read, and for those people infographics provide a way for them to get information as quickly as possible with minimal effort.
  • Boost your SEO. If you share your infographic with a link back to your site, every time someone shares your infographic again, they are also sharing that link. This will drive traffic to your site and boost your search engine rankings.
  • Go further than the web! If your infographic is created with both web and print in mind, you can also use it as a poster or other printed pieces.
  • Now you look like a pro. Include good, solid facts and data in your infographic, and your audience will see you as an authority on the topic. This means they’ll trust you more and are more likely to use your services and products.
  • No expiration. As long as your data and research are solid, your infographic should last for quite a while. You can keep sharing it and referring back to it in future campaigns, blog posts, and marketing efforts.
Should I use infographics?

Let’s take a step back and go over creating the infographic and what your goals are with using it. Is there a specific part of your business you want people to understand better? Are there statistics and data that could lead people to use your specific products and services? What audience are you hoping to reach with your infographic? Do you want to show people how to do something? Will the infographic be humorous or serious?

Once you have your goals and audience nailed down, you need to choose a topic and collect your information and data. Make sure you choose a topic that provides value to your audience so they are more likely to share it. Look for good, reputable sources and interesting facts and statistics, keeping your goals and audience in mind. 

Now it’s time to create the actual infographic. 

Do you want to use it for both web and print? It will have to be built in a way that prints nicely, but can also work on the web. 

Do you want it to look great on desktop and mobile systems? Since mobile usage keeps going up, it’s a good idea to make your infographic work on all screen sizes. Here’s a good statistic for you: 80% of internet users own a smartphone (Smart Insights).

How do you want to represent each piece of data: graphs, pie charts, imagery? This will depend on the type of data you’ve collected and who your audience is. 

What design style, fonts, and colors will you use? You want it to look professional and it must be easy to read.

Now that your infographic is created, it’s time to put it out into the world! Remember your goals and audience that you established earlier. This will inform where you share your infographic.

  • Your website or blog. Placing your infographic on your website first means you are setting up a URL to link back to when you share it other places. Whether it’s a blog post or a landing page, this is your best first step for using your infographic. Make sure you include share buttons on this page so people who are visiting can easily share it. This sharing feature should include social media and HTML embed code in case someone wants to use your infographic on their website.
  • Social media. Most social media is free, so sharing your infographic there is a quick, easy step. Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and LinkedIn are all good places to share to. Also, remember to share your infographic with the link to your website that you set up in the first step if you want the SEO and web traffic benefits.
  • Email marketing. Send out an email with your infographic (remember to include the link back to your site), and include an easy way for recipients to share the infographic from your email to their social media. You might want to include a call-to-action as well.
  • Press release. Put together a press release that discusses your infographic and send it off to publications that speak to your audience.
  • Infographic submission sites. Remember how we said infographics were really popular? Yep. There are websites out there specifically for people to submit their infographics. Some of them require registration, or have paid options, but this is a great way to get your infographic in front of a whole new audience.
  • Print it! Depending on the size and layout of your infographic, it may work nicely as a poster, brochure, or an insert in another printed piece. Posters and brochures are great for handing out to potential clients or at trade shows. Including your infographic in other relevent print campaigns you are doing gets it in front of even more people. With the research and data included in your infographic, it will help position you as an authority on the topic which will strengthen the rest of the campaign you include it in.
  • Presentations. If you have an audience to speak to, you can include your infographic as a great visual tool. Instead of flipping through boring powerpoint slides full of text, use your infographic! You can break it up into pieces so they can be separate slides. You get to share your data and research, and your audience gets a nice visual presentation.
  • Video. Find a video team that can take your infographic and turn it into a video. Now you’ve expanded your reach to places YouTube and Vimeo!

To wrap up, infographics have many benefits and are worth the time taken to create them. For the audience, they are an easy way to take in information. For the business, they are a great way to inform and engage customers. Infographics are fun, versatile, and long lasting.
