How does music effect creativity? How does music affect the brain? In many cases, music has been proven to improve concentration and attentiveness. Playing music such as compositions, creations, and improvisations has shown positive effects on the brain and increased creative instances in the brain. Researchers and authors, Monica Lopez-Gonzalez and Charles J. Limb, have used brain imaging and discovered the neural underpinnings of creativity in all styles of musical performance. Brain sections affected during music performance are the same as when dreaming and meditating.

Listening to music while engaged in creative processes can increase relaxation and improve creativity. Neuroscientist and author, Jonah Lehrer, discovered that simple moments of creativity are related to a steady rhythm of alpha waves emanating from the brain's right hemisphere, also known as the creative side of the brain. When these waves are active in the brain, our attention is directed towards a specific task and more engaged. Lehrer believes that music is the key to relaxing the mind and that music can alter brainwaves in a positive state of mind. Music affects neurotransmitters in the brain that can affect mood and improve creativity.

Certain chemicals within the brain are triggered to stimulate creativity. First is Noradrenaline. This chemical is one that can be activated by stress and anxiety. Mental exercises, such as music, can improve relaxation and allow for increased creative processes. Second, Dopamine is the chemical that is involved with creative processes. Daydreaming allows the mind to drift off and think more creatively. This chemical is triggered by relaxation, which can be brought on by music. Last is PEA, which is a chemical that puts the brain chemistry together. PEA is released during relaxation and good feelings about ourselves. The positive state that the chemical triggers helps to increase abilities and confidence.

Music is important in growing our imaginations. When listening to music that appeals to you, you are more able to come up with creative ideas and get the creative chemicals flowing in the brain. Our moods and minds are in a better state and can open new ideas never thought before.
